South of Copenhagen - Denmark

Just 10kms south of Copenhagen lies a vast nature reserve, with many interesting areas. Explore the stunning trails of Klydesøen, the forests of Kongelunden and the meadows of Kofoeds Enge, a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts with beautiful landscapes and diverse birdlife.

Best time to visit

Breeding birds include three species of grebe including red-necked grebe. Various duck species including, tufted duck, gadwall, shovel, eider, shellduck and garganey.  Breeding waders include, pied avocet, lapwings, ringed and little ringed plover, snipe, dunlin, redshank and oystercatcher.

Breeding passerines include, meadow pipit, skylark, yellow and white wagtails, barn swallows, thrush nightingale, icterine, reed, marsh and wood warblers.

Spring signals the arrival of the north bound migrating waders, including the breeders mentioned above, plus thousands of common cranes and high levels of breeding and passing passerines, including flycatchers, whinchat, wheatear, ring ouzel, firecrest and occasionally golden oriole and rosefinch.

Late summer and autumn sees large numbers of migrating waders with larger movements of ducks and geese from September onwards. The first migrating birds of prey and passerines start moving south from mid-to-late August.    

Winter is time for birds of prey, with many raptors in the area, including, several white-tailed eagles,. peregrine falcons, rough-legged buzzards, hen harriers and red kites. Winter is also a time for large flocks of geese, including barnacle and greater-white fronted as well as smew and goosander.

Key Species

With more than 300 species seen on the 50 sqm isle of Amager, a day list can be long with many specialities, with high quantities of some specie,. Below is a small selection of ‘highlights’.

Raptors: White-tailed eagle, peregrine falcon, hen (excl. summer) and marsh harriers (spring-autumn), eurasian hobby, western osprey.

Waders: More than 25+ species on a good day in later summer and early autumn, including, pied avocet, broad-billed sandpiper, common snipe, curlews, plovers, godwits and various tringa and calidris species.

Red-necked, great-crested and little grebe, various ducks and geese, whilst egrets and spoonbill are possible. Smew and goosander.

Passerines: white, grey and yellow wagtails, redstarts, wheatear, whinchat, red-backed shrike, various finch, crossbills, tits and other small birds. Various warblers can be seen at different times of the year including thrush nightingale, wood and icterine warblers.

Owls are a possibility, especially in winter and there is always the chance of an irruption species such as waxing or nutcrackers.
